There are several different ways to use Stata for your research at UVa.

Perpetual licenses do not expire and may be upgraded to a different flavor of Stata at a reduced price. Annual licenses expire one year from the date of purchase. Although they may be upgraded to a higher. On the other hand, Stata price starts at $179.00 per year per user. Stata offers different versions for students, education, government, and business. It also provides the new purchase, upgrade, and renew facility of the packages. The license is also divided into two categories i.e., single-user, multi-user, and site license.
To use the University's Site Licensed Stata, you may do so in several ways:
- You may log onto a public computer that has the University's software installed on it. A comprehensive list of public computers that have research software installed on them can be found here, and include Library spaces like the Scholars' Lab, Brown SEL, the Fine Arts Library, and other spaces. Stata is also installed on the Data Computer in Brown SEL i043. This computer is available by emailing res-consult@virginia.edu and is bookable.
- You can use Stata on The Hive from virtually any location with an Internet connection. Stata is available on The Hive, but there are fewer than 50 concurrent licenses available. What does that mean? It means that during peak time periods, like mid-terms and finals, only 50 users can use Stata. If you are the next user after the licenses are checked oout you will be shut out of Stata by lack of licenses.

Stata Grad Plan Student Pricing
- UVa has a special program with Stata that allows members of the UVa community to rent or purchase Stata at greatly reduced rates. The special program is the Stata GradPlan. If you want Stata and do not use the GradPlan you will pay full academic price. Make sure you always use the GradPlan.
- Stata for Students: Student Stata pricing can be found here. You can rent a copy, buy an annual copy which will last one year, or you can purchase a perpetual license which will never expire. Note: while Small Stata may seem like the best value, it is limited to very few variables (99) and few observations (1200). The usual rental or purchase is the Intercooled (IC) version, which has the capability to handle most reasonable data sets. - The Stata Download method is the fastest way to get your Stata. It may take up to 24 hours to process your order, but once the order is completed, the download is immediate.
- Stata for Faculty and Staff: Faculty and Staff Stata pricing can be found here. You can purchase an annual license which will expire after one year, or you may buy a perpetual license which will never expire. The usual rental or purchase is the Intercooled (IC) version, which has the capability to handle most reasonable data sets.
